Embarking upon a Software Asset Management (SAM) programme can be a fraught experience if the correct mindset is not adopted from the start. This book seeks to offer you food for thought as to what information you need, in what format you need it, and when. This, aligned to the notion of plugging into executive demands should ensure that your efforts in SAM are not just point in time, but become an integral part of your IT operations.

If you want to take control of your SAM initiative, then this book is the place to start - Remember Software Vendors do not pay your wages - Your company does!

With a technical background in business and systems analysis, Rory has a wide range of first-hand experience advising numerous companies and organisations, including the Royal Navy, Compaq and HP, on the best practices and principles pertaining to software asset management. More recently, Rory has joined the Board of ITAMOrg.com - Europe's leading IT Asset Management organisation.

The TenStep SAM Guide eBook Rory Canavan

Assigned a project at work involving the implementation of software asset management, I was eager to try to find resources to obtain some guidance. This book has some good information in it, but it really doesn't go into detail about anything in particular. It's not really what it sets out to be - a ten-step guide. More aptly, it presents ten things to think about when implementing SAM. In its defense, the book is a brief and a very quick read. Another thing I didn't like is it seemed at times to be an info-mercial for the author's consulting business, including links to the firm's website where one can download various templates for a fee. It led me to wonder whether the book was written primarily as a means to drum up new business.

The TenStep SAM Guide eBook Rory Canavan Reviews

This guide is perfect for individuals who want to start to understand how (and why!) Software Asset Management should be a business process rather than a one-off software reconciliation exercise triggered by a vendor audit. I've trained so many people who want to jump right in with how to establish an Effective Licence Position, without understanding the bigger picture. I wish this guide was mandatory reading before attending my SAM courses!
This is a very useful publication in an industry that suffers from a lack of practical advice. Everyone who is new or inexperienced in SAM needs to read it.

Many other SAM publications tell you what you have to tackle but do not advise how to tackle them or the pitfalls you may encounter.

Rory uses his experience to show the building blocks of SAM in a manner that even the board members would understand. He advises on issues that could make a SAM project fail or be too unwieldy to manage. He then provides sensible/practical advice that will ensure your approach to SAM stays on track.

Well worth the money
The Ten-Step SAM Guide by Rory Canavan is the easiest and most pleasant 66 pages of new material I've read in a long time.

Are you not sure what SAM is and whether you need to learn about it? Let me address the second part of the question first if you are a business owner who has software/hardware assets, an IT manager and employee, or any other employee of a large or small business that uses licensed software and hardware, then you absolutely need to learn the basics of SAM.

Now for the first part of the question

From the book Software Asset Management (SAM) is "the blend of people, systems and processes required to effectively manage software and software-related assets through every stage of their lifecycle."

Mr. Canavan's introduction is highly readable and conversational, with a pleasant tone and attitude, encouraging you to turn the page to learn more.

It's not often I get to read a nonfiction book on software management that is a "page-turner."

Thank you, Mr. Canavan, for a great introduction to something new in my life. Just so you know I am not the owner of a big company. There're only a handful of people in this office.

Before I read The Ten-Step SAM Guide, I had no idea how important Software Asset Management (SAM) was, even to a very small business like ours. I learned a lot and will apply some of the great things immediately in my own proposals or thought processes

1. I never before thought it important to manage the various software DVDs and CD-ROMs, plus downloaded stuff. Now, I'm gonna put them all in one area of office, then transcribe all software names, points of contact for troubleshooting/upgrading, proof of entitlement (receipts from purchases), serial numbers, login/passwords for online accounts in one easy-to-find document.
2. Employ this cool acronym, SMART
3. And this one, too RACI.

Thank you for great gifts in this book, even little things like in items 2 and 3 above. You never know what you will learn from a book that is way out of your area of expertise.

In the days of old, we business owners bought software, loaded it onto a computer, and started using it, never once considering that the software needed to be managed, cared for, updated, and even properly disposed of to preserve the contents of the licensing agreement. The landscape has changed dramatically.

I highly recommend The Ten-Step SAM Guide for any business owner who has software/hardware assets, IT managers and employees, and any other employees of a large or small business that uses licensed software and hardware.
Good book to get a quick understanding of what SAM is all about. Further research is needed, but it is a good place to start.
A well deserved 5 star rating. Not a bible of theoretical content, but a great starter document to get you on your way with SAM or as a checklist to perform the first checks during the implementation and execution of your SAM program.
This book is an excellent resource for Software Asset Management professionals and companies who need SAM. I have read several books on this subject but this book is the one I recommend most to companies who need SAM.
As a seasoned SAM professional I make it my business to talk to other SAM professionals about their experiences in the field. Books, courses, pamphlets often convey a 'perfect state' ideology. This was a refreshing change. The structure and content is relevant and on-point and I would HAPPILY give this as a gift to any new asset manager to pore over prior to embarking on a SAM programme implementation. Solid information delivered in a comprehensive manner without being overly complicated or over simplified. And frankly- I've been doing this for a while and I learnt something new from mr. Canavan. Money well spent.
