Yes, you will recognize Arizona location,s but other than that it descends into typical current cheap scenarios to make a story.
This story is a beautiful one on multiple levels. It is a love story that captivates and steals your heart, a travel log that takes you to far away places and makes you want to travel right along with the characters or take yourself on your own journey and it brings to heart the honor of a promise. It made me question what I would do, how I would feel, and what I could handle. It is a great discussion book and would be a really good choice for a book club because it inspires conversation and story telling/sharing and it is just such a pleasure to read.

It's out of appreciation for the author's determination to complete her first novel and for the premise of the story, which I found really interesting, that I give this book two stars.
I should be the perfect audience for this book. I'm an avid mountain biker, my wife and I are long-term travelers (15 countries in 15 months, and counting) and we have often talked about what we would do when one of us passes. Unfortunately, "Magic Bridge" disappointed from cover to cover. In the hands of a more talented writer, with characters who weren't so incredibly unlikable, this could have been a great story. The book reads as if it were a first draft; it is the poster-child for telling everything, showing nothing. The author's decision to tell the story through multiple first-person POVs is a curious one, and, because of this choice and the lack of skill in the storyteller, the book reads as if the characters are in a stilted documentary. I kept imagining each of them sitting on director chairs taking turns reading their lines, awkwardly trying to quote other characters in attempt to make up for a lack of dialogue.
Perhaps the biggest problem I had with this book is that we are told of Matt's demise in the opening "chapter" (don't get me started on structure), robbing us of any emotional investment and surprise. Foreshadowing can work, but because of this early reveal, instead of embracing the love story, I kept wondering, "is then when he dies?" Bridgette is one of the most annoying, judgmental characters I have ever encountered in a book and, unfortunately, each of the other characters sounded ainfully similar to her. If you removed the proper nouns, it was all but impossible to tell whose POV you were reading. Again, it was all telling with no showing, and I'm not buying a sequel.
A very touching story. The connection between Bridgette and Matt is so profound that it will make anyone believe in a great love like that. The story was so well-written that I thought it was a true story until the end. If you love to travel, you will relate to this story and if you are not a traveler, this story may inspire you to begin. I am looking forward to reading the sequel.
The author made me feel as if I was reading an autobiography, as she put things from her life in the story,and this made it very personal. Just like one of the characters, she is also a registered nurse a volunteer firefighter and loves to hike and travel and has a cabin in Crown King, Arizona. This is a wonderful love story that transcends time. The author has given us a beautifully detailed story of Matt and Bridgette's love and travels. Told in a very real and sensitive way. It made me want to pack up and visit those locations.
I could NOT put this book down, partly because I'm familiar with Crown King, AZ., and had come to know the author a bit from being part of the Crown King group on Facebook during their recent large wildfire. Thomasina has a way with words, expressions, and description that folds you right into the story. I can find nothing to criticize about this book. I got to live vicariously through her tale of world travels, deep & undying love, and coming home to Arizona. I loaned it to a friend who couldn't thank me enough for having her read it, and I know that's how others will feel. Don't waste another minute. Buy it!
A most excellent read! This author has a knack for putting the reader into the story, as well as for describing with intensity what is going on emotionally for the characters. I felt I was right there, no matter the setting -- Crown King, AZ; Ireland; Germany; Nepal; Honduras. The culture of each area came through with color and vibrance. A very rich story and very real characters. The reader gets the whole picture -- from what is going on deep inside the characters, to the broad picture of the setting -- and the interactions between the two. A wild ride -- but also a deep and nuanced look at each main character. Much of the story revolved around biking (racing) and hiking -- and even a bit of scuba diving. I felt like I'd been on a trip around the world, but to more out-of-the-way places. I loved these characters! This story never dragged, but held my interest from first word to last word. Well written with superior depth of characters and setting. Well-edited, too!
Note (added 1/2/14) I just learned there is a sequel to this book, and bought it without so much as a look at the book description. I love authors who give us something of substance, something moving, different, yet realistic. To find these elements, plus great writing and editing is a true gift! I look forward to another great read from Thomasina Burke.
