I was disappointed in the story of the "belle" and the other characters. I expected better from having read two other books by this author, whom I recently discovered. But the historical parts about the New York City Draft Riots and about the Civil War goings-on were well worth reading. They were fascinating to me. The author was an eyewitness of these events, and he wrote them so vividly that I felt I was experiencing them.Plus, there were revelations into many of the feelings of many of the people of both sides of the Civil War that were very interesting (Susan Warner did this well also in her Daisy series of books). The riots were riveting and exhausting to read. They were so real and gave such a picture of what human beings are capable of in a mob. Real persons of the era were named and applauded in their roles of combating the mob. So I think this book is an excellent source of historical knowledge. But the main story about the "belle," her father, and her suitors was oddly lacking in anything that the Christian reader would be looking for, plus being, in my opinion, unrealistic and often downright boring--nothing like the relationships in Barriers Burned Away and What Can She Do? Those were excellent stories, combining great historical information with interesting characters, plot, and spiritual insights for the Christian reader.Product details

An Original Belle Edward Payson Roe 9781523755707 Books Reviews
This pretty vintage pre-1900 historical novel was written by Edward Payson Roe and published by Dodd, Mead and Company in New York in 1985. It has a pretty cover and a frontispiece illustration.
It tells the story of a girl who finds success and accomplishment even though she's not particularly pretty. The setting is during the civil war, culminating in 1863, and touches the New York Draft Riots of 1863, and the Battle of Gettysburg. It seems historically interesting and accurate as well as a good story.
I am a huge fan of Edward Roe's books. I have read A Young Girl's Wooing, Without a Home, Driven Back to Eden and He Fell in Love With His Wife and I absolutely loved all of them. Imagine my dismay when I had to PLOD my way through An Original Belle. I just did not like Marian and I hated how rude she was to Merwyn because he did not go fight in the Civil War. She kept speculating on why he was conducting business pretty much as usual when so many young men his age had gone off to war. He actually had a good reason not to fight but I didn't see that his reason was any of Marian's business. In fact, I didn't see that his not fighting was a whole lot of her business. She would be very rude to him and basically call him a coward then the next time she saw him she would apologize but then insult him again in the same conversation. This happened over and over and finally I lost all patience with her and could not enjoy the book.
Also, the very thing that made some reviewers LOVE this book, i.e. all the descriptions of the battles as they took place, is one of the things I did NOT like about the book. It reminded me of some of the battle scenes in Margaret Mitchell's Gone With The Wind...so much so that I wondered if maybe Roe was guilty of a little plagiarism but then I did a little searching online and saw that Roe was born in1838 and died in 1888 while Mitchell was born in 1900 and died in 1949. Therefore, despite the great similarity between their works, Roe could not be guilty of plagiarism. Wait a minute..You don't reckon that Mitchell... Nah, never mind.
