The incomparable Simone Signoret (1921 - 1985), one of the grand actresses of the twentieth century and one of France's most notable stars, considered herself the "oldest discovery" in Hollywood. After years of blacklisting during the McCarthy era, she was 38 years old when she entered Hollywood through the back door in the 1959 British blockbuster Room at the Top. Her portrayal of the endearing Alice Aisgill earned her the Academy Award in 1960, the first French actor to win a coveted Oscar.

Though a latecomer to Hollywood, Signoret was already an international star who had survived the Nazi occupation of Paris, emerging in 1945 as a beautiful, promising actress capable of communicating more emotion through body language than dialogue alone could achieve. She gained a reputation as the thinking man's sex symbol, and in several films she portrayed prostitutes with subtlety and depth.

She was fiercely protective of her privacy. But after winning the Oscar, she was dragged through the gutter when her second husband, Yves Montand, had a widely publicized affair with Marilyn Monroe. Many attributed her rapid aging and alcoholism to this betrayal. She endured this perception in silence, all the while demonstrating a remarkable capacity to reinvent herself as a best-selling author, respected social activist, and revered actress who remained in the cinema, her "garden of dreams", for over four decades.

Garden of Dreams The Life of Simone Signoret (Audible Audio Edition) Patricia A DeMaio Julie Carruth University Press Audiobooks Books

Patricia A DeMaio has done an amazing jon in telling the very interesting life of Simone Signoret - actress, author and activist. The author starts by giving the reader an introduction, explaining that it was very difficult to get people closest to Simone (those still living) to speak - most notably her daughter Catherine and grandson Benjiman. What the writer has done is provide us with a totally coherent account of a truly amazing woman.. Providing, in great detail, stories pertaining to pre-war Paris and Simone's involvement in it during Nazi occupation. We are then treated to an in depth study of Simone's acting career, her experiences as an unwed mother, her now infamous marriage to Yves Montand and her activism which was very important to Simone especially later in life. Thank you to the writer for giving us such and in depth and, most importantly, entertaining study of what I always believed to be a very mysterious woman.

Garden of Dreams The Life of Simone Signoret (Audible Audio Edition) Patricia A DeMaio Julie Carruth University Press Audiobooks Books Reviews

In her introduction, the author describes her frustrating ability to interview relatives of Signoret. Apparently no one was willing to talk (with the exception of a grandson) and she was therefore limited to published sources. Despite that, the author does an exceptional job detailing the life and personality of the enigmatic Simone Signoret, an actress whose film roles were chosen chiefly by directors and producers who wanted to work with her. DeMaio paints a vivid portrait of Signoret's childhood and the hardships and turmoil of her family evading the Nazis. Signoret's marriage to Yves Montand is also fascinating although he doesn't figure as prominently in the book's latter half and left me with some questions. Instead, the book veers into her film roles and political activism. Despite some lingering questions, the author's workmanlike narrative makes this biography an entertaining read.
An intelligently written book about the French actress Simone Signoret. Although little known in the USA, the author has crafted a story that unveils who this remarkable actress was to the American reader. .The book is a comfortable, easy read with the story woven around another little known (to Americans) actor/musician, her husband Yves Montand. Of particular interest was the development of this woman in war-torn France and its impetus for her social activism and its influence on her acting roles. Another insight was the vicious undercurrent in Hollywood led by renowned gossip-columnist Hedda Hopper who apparently had unprecedented access to the FBI against Signoret and Montand. Signoret was a woman of courage, passion, humor and intelligence. Ms. DeMaio's book does an excellent job of conveying this in her book. Well done.
What a great fast paced and compassionate telling of the life of Simone Signoret. A little known figure in the United States, Simone Signoret was a deep and compelling woman with a life's story we can all relate to and envy. This biography was told with grace and wit and intertwined the story of Simone's famous actor husband as well. I gained an appreciation of the French and the historic time period of the French Occupation. It is a love story, a history lesson, and it provides a front row seat to the emotional growth and contributions of a woman with great beauty, great talent, and a social consciousness moved to action. Simone's story is an inspiration for woman at many levels and Patricia tells the story in an intimate yet nonintrusive voice. Delightful, compelling, educational, and satisfying read. Thank you for the devotion required to generate this substantive work.
Author, Patricia DeMaio has created a fantastic window through which Americans can observe not only the personal and professional evolution of the worthy woman and actress Simone Signoret; but also French history, formative years in cinema and art as well as World War II horrors. Each page holds the ability to initiate a handful of additional tales and begs you to learn more about those environmental and personal influences in Simone Signoret’s life. A very thorough and enjoyable read that highlights the talents of this author and her obvious passion.
I must admit I was not familiar with the name Simone Signoret before a friend told me about her, but after reading this wonderful biography I am now intrigued to know more about this complicated, talented, mentally strong and socially conscious woman. I was as impressed with the detailed research done to paint a fascinating mosaic as I was with the comfortable writing style of the author. I had a strong feeling that the author truly cared for her subject and wanted readers to feel the same. I felt like a true intimate in Simone's life and I miss her now that I have finished this book. Very enjoyable read that provides interesting perspectives on historical world events right along side fascinating old Hollywood scoop.
