"I am Johannes Verne, and I am not afraid."

This was the boy's mantra as he plodded through the desert alone, left to die by his vengeful grandfather. Johannes Verne was soon to be rescued by outlaws, but no one could save him from the lasting memory of his grandfather's eyes, full of impenetrable hatred.

Raised in part by Indians, then befriended by a mysterious woman, Johannes grew up to become a rugged adventurer and an educated man. But even now, strengthened by the love of a golden-haired girl and well on his way to making a fortune in bustling early-day Los Angeles, the past may rise up to threaten his future once more.

And this time only the ancient gods of the desert can save him.

The Lonesome Gods (Audible Audio Edition) Louis L'Amour David Strathairn Random House Audio Books

By my count, The Lonesome Gods was Louis L'Amour’s 83rd novel and the book’s contents align with that impressive production of words. Within these pages is a story produced by a professional storyteller. The characters all have their turn at doing interesting things, they all have an inspirational line or two, and the story is entertaining.

But that’s just about all that The Lonesome Gods is: an entertaining story. The characters are shallow and lack the distinctive attributes that make humans come to life through words. Even their names tend to be non-distinct. Finney, Fraser, Farley, and Fletcher were all on the same wagon while heading towards the west coast. Fraser was a teacher so at least he had that going for him. The rest of the “F” Troupe (sorry) were essentially interchangeable with one another, which didn’t matter very much at all to the plot of the story.

The plot moves from scene to scene and while most scenes work, there are a few that fall flat and a few that progress into fantasy. It may be that L’Amour’s main reason for writing this book was to name-drop all the people and places that eventually resulted in forming modern-day Southern California. Towards the end of the book, however, the travels of the main character become impossible with respect to the places mentioned and the distances between them.

And therein lies the disappointment. I was hoping for the pre-developed California environment to take its place among the characters. I was hoping that descriptions of heat, barren mountains, and seemingly lifeless brush would stir up my own feelings of fear that I felt during my childhood road-trips through these inhospitable places. I was hoping for characters with distinct personalities. In short, I was hoping for something more than just an entertaining story.

The Lonesome Gods (Audible Audio Edition) Louis L'Amour David Strathairn Random House Audio Books Reviews

Louis L'Amour at the top of his game. It took me on a trip across my own home range and transported me back through time to the past in familiar places at unfamiliar times. In some of his earlier works he gets a bit too okie folksy in the dialogue but this one is a page burner. I couldn't get enough of it.
An enjoyable read. Covers the geographical area between Los Angeles, CA and Palm Springs, CA which was interesting for me. The language is a bit stilted except for the gunmen and cowhands who are interpreted well. Not a barn burner but certainly a good read where the reader can be involved with the characters but not be worried.
Fascinating description of life in the desert, scrub forests, the mountains of old California and the West. L'Amour's love of and deep reverence for life in the old far west, the people, and the realities of the time are woven into a heck of a good story. His usual excellent treatment of the land, the ecosystems , the harsh realities of life in the times shines and in a stunning life or death chase through harsh desert landscapes the reader is given a deep understanding of courage, the value of knowing how to live in adverse climates. It is a book the reader is sorry to finish.
Louis L'Amour's wish was to be remembered as a good storyteller, but he was more than good. To me, he was a consummate storyteller of the highest caliber. His depth and breadth of historical knowledge about the world, and his understanding of human nature make his stories interesting and intriguing. Although his stories are set on the frontier in the western United States, it's unfortunate he is pigeonholed as a Western writer. His stories may be westerns by default, but they are first and foremost stories of people making the best of their situation in life, of people rising to meet and overcome great challenges. The Lonesome Gods is a perfect example. There are many reason people were drawn to the western U.S. beyond just wanting to live outside the law or influence of more settled areas; many of these people were intelligent and educated, though maybe not always in the narrow sense the term educated now has. I also like the value L'Amour places on books, reading, and knowledge in this story, and his recognition of the value and intelligence of Native Americans. I really enjoyed this story and the people in it.
As a younger teenager I read one of my grandfather's L'Amours and decided he wasn't for me but a recent referral from a friend had me pick this up and I am so glad I did. I loved this book and was on the edge of my seat through it. In the middle there is a section that is so poetic and beautiful.
I really enjoyed this story. It was fun to read and the story did not let me down. I've traveled the Deserts in Nevada, New Mexico and California and have some idea of them desolate look territory. Driving through is hot and dangerous enough. I can't not imagine walking for days and day. You will get thirsty just reading this story. I do wish there was just a little more of the ending. But that's me. LOL. I like a happy ending
The Lonesome Gods, by Louis L’Amour, is a beautifully written book that takes place in the California desert. The main character, Johannes Verne, is a well-read, thoughtful young man who has always been overshadowed by his Grandfather’s hatred. Johannes finds himself longing to search the desert for something he left behind many years before when he was abandoned there by his Grandfather. This longing constantly drives him back to find whatever it was he lost. During his lonely years of growing up, the old worshiped gods of the desert, who had been long forgotten and may or may not even be real, keep him company. There are great amounts of wisdom woven into every chapter, and excitement, romance, and mystery intrigue you until the end. Anyone can benefit from this book, but especially those who know that there are secrets and adventure in the past and future of every person.
